ABOUT

Big Bada Boom is a collective of South Asian musicians who occasionally perform together. They formed in 2002, when DJ Nastyk and Dubey Tabla Walla hosted the first Big Bada Boom party at Southern Cross, a bar in Pōneke Wellington and, following the success of that event, continued to host events together. The collective describes their sound as “Bollywood, Bhangra, Asian Underground Hip Hop and Dancehall. [...] Aside from the instant lure of phat Bhangra tunes and grooving Bollywood favourites, Big Bada Boom has always set out to push the envelope when it comes to Indian dance music.”

In March 2007, Big Bada Boom released their first EP. The self-titled EP was described as “their take on South Asian Hip Hop”, and the band at that time included Ajnabeat (beats, samples), Ji (guitars), Mantra (MC/vocalist), Pundit (MC/vocalist), KthrNak (MC/vocalist) and Dubey (tabla, Bass, Keys).

Their live performances have included opening for Talvin Singh and taking part in the Cuba Street Carnival in 2007.
