ABOUT

Charles Buenconsejo, who was born and raised in Cebu, in the Philippines, is a multidisciplinary artist, photographer, and land cultivator currently based in Whangārei, Aotearoa. His artistic practice revolves around the exploration and deconstruction of visual culture through print, video and installation works.

Buenconsejo studied fine arts at the University of the Philippines. He had his first solo show in 2012 and has since been a prolific artist winning numerous awards. Most notable are the 2013 and 2014 Ateneo Art Awards, which earned him a residency with the La Trobe University Visual Arts Centre in Bendigo, Australia.

Buenconsejo and his wife, Grace Bariso-Buenconsejo moved to Aotearoa in 2016 and established a community-focused creative arts and gardening project called Open Homes in their backyard in New Lynn, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. In 2021, Open Homes permanently closed and the couple moved to Whangārei and founded the arts collective Soil of Cultures with their long-time collaborator Auggie Fontanilla. Since then, Buenconsejo has been deeply engaged in weaving the principles of food sovereignty and agroecology into his art practice.
